Understanding Moisture Removal in Industrial Compressed Air Systems

As engineers and technicians in the industrial sector are well aware, the demand for optimal air quality in compressed air systems is paramount. At Pye-Barker Engineered Solutions, we recognize the importance of effective moisture removal solutions tailored to the specific needs of industrial machinery.

Deciphering Moisture Levels: The Importance of Pressure Dew Point (PDP)

Determining the required dryness involves considering the pressure dew point (PDP), expressed in degrees Fahrenheit. The PDP signifies the temperature at which moisture in compressed air condenses into a liquid form. Given that compressed air at 100 PSIG is saturated with 100% relative humidity, effective moisture removal becomes essential.

Methods of Moisture Removal

To address moisture concerns, various methods are employed in compressed air systems:

  1. After-Cooler and Moisture Separator Description: Placed at the compressor discharge, an after-cooler reduces air temperature, coupled with a moisture separator to eliminate condensed water. Recommendation: Ideal for basic applications, but may not suffice for higher air quality needs.
  2. Long Pipe Run with Moisture Separator Description: Cooling occurs during the lengthy pipe run, with a moisture separator for water removal. Caution: Risk of condensed water causing rust and scale, making it a less preferred option.
  3. Refrigerated Air Dryer Description: Suitable for indoor setups, these dryers lower the dew point to 35-50 deg F, preventing condensation in the lines. Additional Recommendation: Install a point-of-use filter downstream for enhanced air quality.
  4. Pressure Swing Twin-Tower Desiccant Dryer Description: Recommended for critical air quality needs or freezing conditions, lowering the pressure dew point to -40 deg F or even -100 deg F. Variations: Heatless regenerative, heated regenerative, blower purge heated regenerative, and heat-of-compression dryers are available.
  5. Dew Point Suppression Dryers Description: These dryers suppress the dew point 15-20 deg F below the incoming air temperature, utilizing a single desiccant tower. Consideration: Requires periodic desiccant replacement.
