The Environments Impact on Your BlowerThe Environments Impact on Your Blower

With spring and summer comes an increase in a white car’s nightmare, pollen. Everyone experiences difficulty breathing while sneezing seems to become a more similar occurrence. This issue can also be the reason the blower in your shop has become louder with use.

In a typical inlet filter for a blower the element might be the issue if you are experiencing problems with your blower. Pollen will clog the element and decrease air flow or it could damage the element. When the blower sucks in air, along with pollen, it applies pressure to the element which can fail and lead to improper filtration.

Mixing lubricants, or using incorrect lubricant for the application is a recipe for disaster.Do Not Mix Lubricants!!

I had a customer call and had a positive displacement blower that needed oil. He said “I have some compressor oil – can I use that in the blower?” I have had others call stating they had a rotary screw compressor using mineral base oil (typically ATF or equivalent), and wondered if he could top-off with synthetic lube. Both are recipes for disaster.

In the first case, positive displacement blowers require a higher viscosity oil than rotary screw compressors. Typically, they will require a viscosity index of ISO 220 oil (40W SAE). Rotary screw compressors will typically require an ISO 46 (for synthetic lubricants). The ISO 46 is much too thin to provide proper lubrication to the gears and bearings of a positive displacement blower. Conversely, the ISO 220 blower oil will be too heavy and thick for use in the rotary screw compressor, starving the maintenance and greater reliability compressor for oil.

Just recently the team here at Pye-Barker got their first look at the Wright Flow Technologies’ Revolution Pumps. So I sat down with the team to get everyone’s opinions of the pump.

The Revolution Pump is Wright Flow’s latest offering in the hygienic pump category. It is EHEDG Certified, is 3A listed, FDA and USDA compliant. It can produce flows ranging from 2.6 to 836 GPM.

It is suitable for use in the chemical industry for pumping raw ingredients, chemical transfer and solvent recovery. It’s also well designed for use in the personal care products category – skin care, toothpastes, cosmetics, soaps and hair care products. In bio pharmaceuticals it can be used to pump creams, ointments, ferments, injectables, ultra-filtration's, and blood and plasma processing.

In the food and beverage industry it is great for Distillers and Wine Makers, fruit and vegetable purees, carbonated drinks and juices. These pumps work well for pumping baby food, edible oils, soft fruits and vegetables, soups, sauces, egg, fish meat and poultry applications. Along with whey proteins and even confectionery. For the dairy industry it can pump butter, cheese, cream, milk yogurt and yogurt fruits.

Break downs happen, sometimes they are totally unavoidable. Other times breakdowns are just a matter of time – caused by a mistake made during reassembly after routine maintenance, or worse still not doing the required maintenance at the appropriate time (I’m shocked but it happens far too often).

With that said, here few steps to getting yourself back on track after a break down in the most efficient way possible.

Step 1: “Don’t Panic.” Douglas Adams

To me it always seems like the best first step – because when people are panicked, they don’t think clearly… this can lead to poor decisions being made, spending money unnecessarily or spending more money than you should to rectify a problem.

I’ve seen my share of breakdowns where someone in the organization has panicked and overestimated the value of the downtime and ended up spending far too much money to get back too little productive time.

Product Review: Viking Motor Speed PumpsViking Motor Speed Pumps

I’ve just gotten my hands on some of the new Viking Motor Speed Pumps. And frankly I’m fairly impressed. For Pye-Barker’s clients these look like they are the perfect product for applications where you are pumping low viscosity liquids at high speed and capacity.

What these pumps are ideally suited to would include:

What we really like here about the Viking Motor Speed Pump Line is:

They are designed to do what they do well and do it reliably.

These cast iron workhorses are designed for peak efficiency running at motor speed so you can use a smaller pump running at higher speed and still get a long life out the pump.

The engineering team at Viking have made significant improvements on the existing pump design so that the new range offers higher speed and flow from a smaller footprint – so that you can reclaim space that would otherwise be occupied.

Everything in the pumps design is to maximize the flow rates and minimize the wear and tear on the pump so that it lasts, with a minimum of maintenance or downtime.

“In The Absence Of Information People Will Buy Based On Price.”

new air compressor unitI’ll admit that I can’t for the life of me remember who said that but I don’t believe I have the genius to think it up myself. And the default information finder of the 21st century, Google – hasn’t helped at all.

When clients are comparing two alternative proposals, far too often we find them preferring the cheaper option because it is exactly that, cheaper upfront…

The reason I say upfront is because when you buy a pump or a blower or an air compressor you are actually making a capital investment in your business.

You either have an existing unit that needs replacing or you need it as part of new process. No doubt that process is either going to cut costs or is going make you money by allowing you to offer up a new product or service.

So while it is tempting to pay as little as possible up front there is more to the purchase than just sticker price.

Pumps are a lot like the human body. Keep them healthy and they will provide you with a lifetime of good health and worry free living.

In all the Krav Maga classes that I teach see this as well, the students who take the best care of their bodies, get the best performance out of them.

In my work with the maintenance team here at Pye-Barker I can see exactly the same ‘thing’ going on with our clients’ pumps.

The clients who take the best care of their pumps are the ones who get the best performance and least downtime. Thankfully, unlike the human body there aren’t thousands of competing theories on how to take good care of your pumps.

Buy The Right Air Compressor

I don’t know why this is, but we see a lot of customers underestimate their requirements when they are purchasing an air compressor. They often neglect the volume of air needed and neglect the quality – how dry the air needs to be or how good a filter is required so that rust, debris, slag and water don’t end up in your tools and ruin them.

All of these are opportunities for our competitors to cut the price of their proposal for a new compressor and leave the client with higher ongoing costs…

Sure it looks really cheap on paper… But for the sake of a decent quality filtration system maybe you have to do an extra repair on each of your air tools every 12 months, maybe you knock 25% off of their potential life.

Product Review: Gardner Denver IQ Blower Packages

We’ve got clients in multiple industries using Gardner Denver IQ Blowers for applications including pneumatic conveying, vacuum and aeration in wastewater treatment. However, I know there are clients and customers who should be using them but aren’t.

I thought it was time to do a review of the IQ Blower range and talk about why they are, in my humble opinion, the best blower units on the market.

The design team at Gardner Denver has worked very hard with the IQ Blower range to achieve 3 primary goals:
